School Excellence Fund - DEIS

A chara,

You may be aware that the Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton TD, recently announced the second phase of the School Excellence Fund (SEF) – DEIS.  The SEF-DEIS is a Department of Education and Skills initiative aimed at facilitating clusters of schools to collaborate in adopting creative and innovative approaches to tackling issues relating to educational disadvantage.  Currently, ten clusters of schools comprising pre-schools, primary schools and post-primary schools (35 in total) are participating in the first phase of the SEF-DEIS.  These clusters of schools are cross-sectoral and are working on a range of initiatives.  Further detail on these initiatives is provided in the attached Guidelines document.  I have also attached an Application Form for participation in SEF-DEIS for your consideration.

Funding up to a maximum of €55,000 will be made available to each of ten clusters of schools to participate in the second phase of the SEF-DEIS.  Clusters, typically, will comprise three or four schools or educational settings.  It is envisaged that the clusters will work for a period of three years as part of the project.  Guidance on how the funding may be spent is to be found in the accompanying Guidelines document.  Each cluster will have an inspector assigned to work with key personnel to support and advise in relation to the actions which will be undertaken as part of the project.  The assigned inspector will not have an evaluative function in participating schools while the project is underway.

The Inspectorate will be hosting information sessions in a number of Education Centres (details below).  I am very grateful to the Directors of the centres for agreeing to host the sessions. These information sessions will run for approximately one hour and inspectors will provide information on the SEF-DEIS project and guidance on how to complete the Application Form and be available to answer any queries.

I would be grateful if you could confirm attendance via sef@education.gov.ie as soon as possible.  If you would like further information on the project, but cannot attend one of the information sessions, please submit your query via the same email address.  It is intended to provide one further information meeting for schools in the north of Dublin.  The location, date and time for this meeting will be confirmed presently.
