Dear Colleagues,

As you are aware, the INTO has been lending its backing to a campaign that aims to plant over one million trees in Africa and Ireland each year, to combat climate change.

We signed up to support this campaign with Self Help Africa in 2020, but because of the Covid-19 pandemic had to defer our active participation until the current school year.

Every school that participates in the One Million Trees campaign will receive a free native Irish tree per classroom, together with age-appropriate lesson plans that can be used by teachers with their pupils.

We believe that as we exit the pandemic, this project provides schools with a pro-active educational intervention that resonates positively with the INTOs goal of Global Citizenship and Solidarity, while allowing schoolchildren to do something practical that responds to the climate change challenge.

Why trees?

Trees are one of the most effective ways to remove harmful carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The communities that Self Help Africa works with in rural Africa have a very small carbon footprint, yet they are among the worst affected by climate change.

This initiative will support the vital food and farming needs of Africa’s rural poor, while contributing to the wider global effort to absorb carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Resources

The INTO has worked with Self Help Africa to develop the resource materials that link with the curriculum, as well as a short lesson plan on native Irish trees and African trees. These resources are available at junior/senior infants, first/second class, third/fourth class and fifth/sixth class levels. We hope that, through this tree planting project, we can educate our young generation and our school communities

about climate change and empower them to become solution driven, rather than problem focused.

You can find out more about the trees that will be planted by visiting Self Help Africa’s online tree directory at https://selfhelpafrica.org/onemilliontrees/tree-directory/.

As we launch this campaign, we are hoping to sign up schools and classes willing to support the initiative. We would be grateful if you would help.

You will be able to find more information in InTouch, INTO E-Newsletters, school emails, and from INTO National Committees, Branches, Staff Reps. and member contacts.

We are hoping to sign up schools in the coming weeks to participate in a national planting day in Irish schools on Friday, December 3rd next – when communities in Africa are aiming to plant 25,000 tree seedlings on a single day in Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia. (Once planting season returns, to celebrate Irish schools efforts, Self Help Africa will plant a further 75,000 seedlings in projects in over 10 other countries).

We would be grateful if you would lend your support to this initiative by:

  • Highlighting this project at INTO interactions, October Meetings, Conferences, Seminars etc.
  • Register your own school and encourage your colleagues to do likewise.
  • Help with identifying schools island-wide who might wish to become involved
  • Support the promotion of this campaign in any other way that you can

Self Help Africa welcome voluntary contributions towards the One Million Trees project. Each donation of €2 from schools will allow us to plant an additional 10 trees in your schools name, in Africa. We will provide you with the geo-location of where they are so that you can look at your trees on Google Maps.

You can read more about this initiative in this accompanying leaflet.

Thanking You,

President, INTO

A Chomhghleacaithe,

Mar is eol daoibh, tá an CMÉ ag tacú le feachtas go bhfuil sé mar aidhm aige breis is milliúin crann a chur san Aifric agus in Éirinn, gach bliain chun athrú aeráide a throid.

Chuireamar tús leis an dtacaíocht seo i 2020 ach da bharr na paindéime bhí orainn rannpháirtíocht gníomhach ar chur ar ceall do dtí an bhliain scoile seo.

Gheobhaidh gach scoil a ghlacann páirt san fheachtas crann óg dúchasach do gach rang, maraon le pleananna ceachta atá oiriúnach d’aois na bpáistí.

Creidimid, agus an phaindéim á fhágáil againn, go dtugann an tionscnamh seo deis do na daltaí inár scoileanna, rud praiticiúil a dhéanamh chun freagairt don dúshláin athrú aeráide agus a luíonn le haidhm an CMÉ Saoránacht agus Dlúthpháirtíocht Domhanda a chur chun cinn.

Cén fáth crainn?

‘Siad crainn ceann de na bealaí is éifeachtaí dé-ocsaíd charbóin dochrach a bhaint ón atmaisféar. Tá lorg carbóin an-bheag ag na pobail lena n-oibríonn Self Help Africa, ach is orthu siúd atá an tionchar is measa ó athrú aeráide. Tacóidh an tionscnamh seo le na riachtanais feirmeoireachta agus bia bunúsacha atá ag pobail tuaithe na hAfraice. Ag an am céanna cabhrófar leis an aidhm domhanda, dé-ocsaíd charbóin dochrach an ionsúigh san atmaisféar.

Acmhainní

D’oibrigh and CMÉ le Self Help Africa chun acmhainní a fhorbairt, chomh maith le plean ceachta gairid ar chrainn dúchasach na hÉirinn agus na hAfraice. Tá na hacmhainní seo ar fáil do na ranganna Naíonáin, Ranganna 1agus2, Ranganna 3 agus 4 agus Ranganna 5 agus 6.

Tá súil againn gur féidir linn, tríd an fheachtais seo, oideachais a chur ar dhaltaí agus ar phobal na scoile faoi athrú aeráide agus iad a chumasú le díriú ar réiteach an faidhbe seachas an fhadhb.

Is féidir níos mó a fháil amach faoi na crainn a chuirfear ag: https://selfhelpafrica.org/onemilliontrees/tree-directory/.

Agus an fheachtais seo á sheoladh táimid ac súil le tacaíocht ó scoileanna, Bheimis buíoch as ucht bhur gcabhair.

Beidh breis eolais ar fáil in InTouch, E-Scéalta INTO,  ó Choistí Náisiúnta agus Craoibhe agus ó ionadaithe foirne INTO.

Táimid ag súil le scoileanna a earcú le linn na seachtainí atá le teacht le páirt a ghlacadh i lá náisiúnta chun crainn a chur ar an Aoine, 3ú Nollaig, lá ar a mbeidh pobail san Aifric ag súil le 25,000 crainn óg a chur in aon lá amháin in Malawi, Mozambique agus Zambia

Bheimis buíoch dá dtacófá leis an dtionscnamh seo sna bealaí thíos:

  • Aird a tharraingt ar an dtionscnamh ag cruinnithe INTO i Mí Dheireadh Fómhair, comhdhálacha, seimineár 7rl
  • Do scoil féin a chlárú agus iarraidh ar scoileanna chomhghleacaithe an rud ceanna a dhéanamh
  • Cabhraigh linn scoileanna a aimsiú gur mhaith leo páirt a ghlacadh
  • Cabhraigh linn in aon slí eile gur féidir leat.

  • Chuirfeadh Self Help Africa fáilte roimh síntiús don tionscnamh Aon Mhilliún Crann. Le gach €2 ó do scoil is féidir linn 10 gcrann eile a chur san Aifric in ainm na scoile. Tabharfar geo-shuíomh bhur gcrainn daoibh ionas gur féidir le scoileanna féachaint orthu ar Google Earth nó Google Maps.

Tá a thuilleadh eolais ar fáil ar an mbileog iniata.
